Ongoing Investigation in the Case of 16-Year-Old Lilly Bova’s Shooting

2 days ago 0

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday that there is insufficient evidence to file criminal charges in the shooting death of 16-year-old Lilly Bova, found with a gunshot wound in her bedroom in late March. The office has not ruled out future charges. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office respects this decision but believes charges are warranted.

Bova, a Glenbrook South High School sophomore, was found in her home at the Salem Walk Apartment complex shortly after 11 a.m. on March 28. Paramedics transported her to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined her death was caused by a gunshot wound to the head, although the manner remains undetermined.

The State’s Attorney’s Office explained that the current evidence does not meet the legal burden of proof required for charges. “Based on the evidence obtained, we cannot proceed with criminal charges at this time,” the office stated. They emphasized their commitment to justice and accountability, only proceeding with charges when supported by evidence.

The office has informed Bova’s family of this decision, acknowledging the profound impact of her death on her family, friends, and community.

Bova’s mother, Christine Maga, has previously criticized the delay in pressing charges against a potential suspect. Anthony Bova, Lilly’s father, expressed dissatisfaction with the decision not to file charges in a Facebook post.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office stated that detectives have been gathering evidence since March 28, hoping that gunshot residue, ballistic, and electronic evidence might lead to charges eventually. They respect the State’s Attorney’s request for more time and urge anyone with information to come forward.

Lilly Bova’s death has deeply affected the Northbrook community and Glenbrook South High School. Upon returning from spring break, teachers provided support and counseling to students. Neighbors remembered Bova as caring and warm, with Jeanie Gamorot describing the Bova family as “very nice.”

Authorities call for anyone with information to contact sheriff’s police detectives at 708-865-4896.
