Bill Ritter Announces Diagnosis During Broadcast
Longtime New York news anchor Bill Ritter, who has been a fixture on WABC-TV since 2001, announced his diagnosis of early-stage Alzheimer’s disease during the Eyewitness News broadcast. Ritter, at 76 years old, revealed this would be his last night anchoring the program after a series of medical tests confirmed his condition.
Ritter explained that current treatments are managing his Alzheimer’s disease but noted the absence of a cure. “Unless an amazing cure is found soon, tonight will be my last newscast,” he stated.
Ritter’s Career and Continued Role at ABC7
With a career at WABC-TV starting in 1998, Ritter previously worked with the Los Angeles Times, local TV stations in California, and ABC News. He anchored the station’s 11 p.m. Eyewitness News in 1999 and joined the 6 p.m. newscast in 2001, also anchoring the 5 p.m. show for several years.
Heidi Gutman from Disney captured Ritter’s image anchoring the 6 p.m. newscast since 2001. Despite leaving the anchor desk, he will continue at the station, focusing on reports about Alzheimer’s and other neurological conditions. ABC7’s General Manager, Marilu Galvez, emphasized his impact, stating, “Bill Ritter has guided New Yorkers through important stories with insight and integrity.”
Ritter’s new role at ABC7 includes sharing personal updates and providing resources for understanding Alzheimer’s disease and its effects.
Personal Connections with Alzheimer’s Disease
Ritter reflected on his father, who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in 1998 after a long battle. This personal history underscores his commitment to raising awareness and helping others affected by the disease.
