Congress is set to let a ban expire on the use of tax dollars for Planned Parenthood. Sen. Josh Hawley from Missouri wants to investigate the organization for allegedly using taxpayer funds to support transgender procedures.
Hawley addressed his concerns in a letter to Mohammad Oz, the Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. He highlighted that approximately $1.5 billion in funding has allegedly flowed to Planned Parenthood, which he claims advocates for transgender treatments for minors.
Hawley criticized the lapse in the ban on federal funding for abortion providers. Initially implemented during President Trump’s administration, this ban is set to end on July 4. Despite efforts to extend it, including a failed amendment to a budget reconciliation package, the ban remains threatened.
His particular concern revolves around the redirection of funds toward gender-affirming treatments or referrals for surgical procedures for minors. According to Hawley, Planned Parenthood exploits legal loopholes to provide these treatments without requiring parental consent.
Hawley noted a significant rise in Planned Parenthood’s provision of gender-affirming care, referring to it as a 40% increase year-over-year. He cited a Government Accountability Office report tracking funds between 2019 and 2022, although this report did not specify if funds went toward transgender surgeries or medications.
Hawley argues that the money could otherwise assist individuals in poverty or the elderly. There is concern that these funds support Planned Parenthood’s transgender services for minors.
