Cubs Secure Victory with Strong Offensive Performance Against Rockies

2 days ago 0

In a decisive game against the Colorado Rockies, Alex Bregman led the Chicago Cubs to a 9-3 victory at Coors Field, helping them avoid a sweep and boost their record above .500. Bregman, the Cubs’ third baseman, hit a key two-run homer in the seventh inning, contributing to the team’s overall offensive success.

Seiya Suzuki initiated the scoring with a grand slam off a slider from Rockies starter Ryan Feltner in the fourth inning, giving the Cubs a 4-1 lead. The momentum continued in the fifth inning with two more runs, while catcher Carson Kelly finalized the Cubs’ scoring with a solo home run in the eighth.

Despite his home run performance, Bregman expressed dissatisfaction, acknowledging he missed earlier opportunities at bat. After hitting his sixth home run of the season, he noted, “The whole series was better, still missed too many pitches in the heart of the plate. Normally I have a 1.000 to 1.200 OPS in the middle of the plate. Right now, it’s not there. It’s god-awful.”

The Cubs had not scored three home runs in a single game since April 25, a period during which they recorded five such games. Before this win, they were in a slump, scoring three or fewer runs in five consecutive games, tying their longest such streak this season. Right-hander Edward Cabrera supported the team’s victory by pitching 5 1/3 innings and giving up two runs on solo home runs.

Manager Craig Counsell commented on the team’s recent struggles, emphasizing the potential and talent among the players as a source of optimism. “Our players are the source of the optimism. We have very talented, good players, and that absolutely creates optimism. There’s going to be struggles, and sometimes they confuse you, but the talent of our players is the source of optimism.”

Both Bregman and Suzuki had significant contributions during the game. Bregman mentioned the importance of improving and living up to the team’s potential, especially with only a few players currently performing at their best. His recent performance reflects improvement, having reached base in 31 of his last 35 games since May 3, with a .327 on-base percentage. “Happy to contribute to help our team win a baseball game,” Bregman said.

Suzuki’s grand slam was his third career achievement of that magnitude, further extending his hitting streak to eight games. During this period, he posted an impressive .308/.379/.654 slash line with three home runs. After his grand slam, Suzuki expressed relief and satisfaction, acknowledging previous frustrations for missing opportunities.

“I felt like I haven’t been able to help out our pitchers, they’re pitching in tough situations,” Suzuki said through his interpreter, Edwin Stanberry. “There’s more sort of frustration that I had towards myself, not hitting in those opportunities, and I was finally able to get that hit.”
