The International Heist of Rare Russian Literary Works

4 days ago 0

Valuable works by Russian masters such as Pushkin and Gogol have been disappearing from libraries across Europe. Six defendants now face prosecution for these thefts.

An International Book Heist

A Paris courtroom is currently the stage for the latest development in a saga involving an international book heist. This operation led to the removal of over 170 rare Russian literary works from major European libraries. Central to this crime are the works of Alexander Pushkin, a 19th-century poet and novelist widely regarded as the father of modern Russian literature. Libraries from countries including the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland suffered losses amounting to nearly $3 million in total value.

The Accused

On trial are six Georgian defendants, with most remaining unnamed by French authorities, charged with conspiracy and theft. Officials suspect they belong to a larger network composed of family members and associates. This group allegedly traveled around Europe by bus using fake identities and falsified library cards over a period of approximately two years. Their aim was to locate, photograph, study, and replace rare Russian manuscripts with counterfeits.

The defendants are accused of stealing and planning to steal rare works of cultural and historical significance, predominantly those penned by Pushkin, from various libraries, including the National Library of France.

Law Enforcement Actions

Their trial follows a significant crackdown in 2024, spearheaded by European law enforcement. This operation led to the apprehension of several Georgians implicated in the thefts and resulted in the arrest of around six individuals.

One noteworthy target was the Tartu University Library in Estonia, known for its reading hall for rare books and manuscripts. It was among the many libraries victimized by these thefts.
