Tragic Rope Jump Incident in Brazil Highlights Safety Failures

59 minutes ago 0

A tragic incident occurred in São Paulo State, Brazil, when a 21-year-old woman died during a rope jumping experience. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, from Jandira, São Paulo, lost her life after instructors failed to secure her with safety equipment, confirmed the Civil Police of São Paulo.

The event happened at Ponte do Esqueleto, or Skeleton Bridge, an abandoned site popular for rope jumping located roughly 100 miles northwest of São Paulo city. The bridge is approximately 30 meters, nearly 100 feet, above ground.

Rope jumping is akin to bungee jumping but uses a less flexible rope that swings instead of bouncing. Unfortunately, Ms. de Freitas was not connected to the necessary rope. Videos of the incident showed her lifted by two instructors and then thrown off the bridge with her arms spread.

The footage, viral on social media, depicted the instructors wearing harnesses attached to a rope. A third person assisted by holding her ankles before she was launched. However, her harness clips appeared empty, indicating a lack of safety measures that day.

Earlier videos from the bridge site showed safe practices where jumpers had a thick rope clipped securely to their harnesses. Sadly, this was not the case for Ms. de Freitas.

When police arrived, they found a nurse attempting to revive Ms. de Freitas, who showed no vital signs. Three employees from the company offering these jumps were arrested. Two initially fled but were later captured. It was revealed that the company lacked authorization to operate from the bridge.

Ms. de Freitas wore a GoPro-style camera during her jump. However, police were unable to locate it, and the instructors did not know its location.

Her burial took place in São Paulo State on the following Sunday, as reported by The Associated Press.

Leonardo Coelho contributed additional information to the report.
