Unprecedented Red Card Incidents Mark World Cup Opener

2 days ago 0

The opening match of the World Cup in Mexico City presented a rare occurrence in international soccer, with three players sent off with red cards. This situation hasn’t been seen since a 2006 game between Portugal and the Netherlands where four players were ejected, setting a World Cup record.

The previous World Cup in Qatar in 2022 witnessed only four red cards throughout the entire tournament. On Thursday at the Azteca Stadium, players Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane from South Africa and César Montes from the tournament co-host received red cards.

This marks the first instance of three players being sent off in the opening match of a World Cup. Notably, all three were straight red cards meaning none involved two yellow cards.

Mexico secured a 2-0 victory. Sithole was sent off after fouling Mexico’s Brian Gutierrez near the box at the start of the second half. The situation worsened for South Africa when Zwane was expelled following a video review for striking Roberto Alvarado in the face in the 84th minute. Montes received a red card in stoppage time for tackling Khuliso Mudau.

The red cards will result in the suspension of these players for at least one more match. South Africa is scheduled to play against the Czech Republic, and Mexico will face South Korea in Guadalajara.

The 2006 match between Portugal and the Netherlands took place in Germany and was infamous for its four red cards, two per team. The Nuremberg game also had 16 yellow cards.
