F.A.A. Recommends Obstruction Lights on Planned Trump Arch

5 days ago 0

The Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A.) stated that plans by the Trump administration to build a 259-foot arch near Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport likely pose no aviation safety risks. However, the F.A.A. advised incorporating red, blinking obstruction lights like those on the Washington Monument.

In a feasibility study released on Friday, evaluators mentioned that the proposed arch would not significantly impact airspace or navigation procedures at the airport. Before proceeding, the F.A.A. must still perform a formal evaluation, and a regional planning commission must approve the project. The feasibility study suggests the arch likely won’t be deemed a hazard, thus avoiding bureaucratic delays in construction.

Called the “triumphal arch” by President Trump, this construction is part of broader plans to modify the capital’s appearance, which includes a White House ballroom and enhancements to the National Mall’s reflecting pool.

Aviation experts disagree on the arch’s potential impact on aircraft navigation at Reagan National Airport. Safety concerns intensified last year after a commercial jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided in midair, resulting in 67 fatalities.

The F.A.A. cited the arch as an obstruction by protruding into a preferred airspace, needing additional scrutiny. The study specified the necessity of red obstruction lights to ensure safety.

The initial study concluded that, if outfitted with lights, the arch would not disrupt air traffic or necessitate altered flight procedures. Structures taller than 200 feet require formal hazard evaluations, but feasibility studies like the recent one are voluntary for builders and not mandatory.

Although the feasibility study provides insights, the F.A.A. clarified that it is not a definitive hazard clearance and a full aeronautical study is essential before construction begins.
