Former NBA player Jay Williams attended both UFC Freedom 250 and the NBA Finals recently. He shared his experience, stating, “I was there, 4,000-seat arena for the UFC. I have to say, coming from multiple NBA Finals games, this was better.” Williams expressed these thoughts during a conversation with Stephen A. Smith on ESPN.
Williams emphasized the unique setting of the UFC event, noting that “With the White House right there, it was incredible.” After the UFC lightweight championship fight, President Donald J. Trump and his family took a photo inside the Octagon.
Stephen A. Smith also praised the spectacle, saying it “look[ed] spectacular,” commending UFC President Dana White for the event’s success. Williams and Smith, both prominent ESPN analysts, were honest in their opinions. This contrasts with many in the sports media, who have been reluctant to speak positively about an event associated with President Trump.
There’s been controversy surrounding the event. Former ESPN host Jemele Hill harshly criticized it, drawing a controversial comparison. She wrote on Threads: “This UFC 250 event has the feel of a Klan rally. Just utterly disgraceful and disgusting.” Yet, had a similar event occurred during Barack Obama’s presidency, media reactions might have been more favorable.
Williams and Smith’s approach, focusing on the event itself rather than politics, deserves recognition. Dana White declared, “It was an amazing experience; this was a one-of-one,” highlighting the event’s uniqueness. White also mentioned that constructing the structure on the South Lawn cost the UFC $60 million.
The event reinforced the UFC’s status as a top sports organization in the U.S. It is argued that the UFC has surpassed the NHL and PGA, ranking as the fourth most popular league in America. This is notable for an organization that struggled for state sanctioning when it started 32 years ago.
Indeed, Jay Williams is correct in his assessment. UFC Freedom 250 was a distinctive event, offering a different experience than the NBA Finals.
