Growing Tensions Between Trump and Italian PM Meloni

3 hours ago 0

A conflict between President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emerged following the recent G7 summit. This development highlights increasing tensions between two leaders who were once closely aligned politically, with Meloni being one of Trump’s key allies.

Prime Minister Meloni expressed her surprise and disappointment at Trump’s claims, made in an interview with an Italian news outlet, that she “begged” him for a photograph during the summit. She described Trump’s statements as fabricated. Meloni stated, “Donald Trump’s statements are completely made up. I am frankly astonished. I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves like this towards his allies.”

Trump shared his perspective during an appearance on La7 TV channel. “She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her,” he recounted. He added that Meloni was likely pleased to have spoken with him.

In 2024, Trump had hosted Prime Minister Meloni at his Mar-a-Lago residence, where they shared a photograph showing them smiling, with Trump giving a thumbs-up.

I can only say it is disappointing that he does not show the same determination with the enemies of the West and of the United States, whose leaders he instead treats with far greater indulgence,” remarked Meloni.

She emphasized, “There is one thing he should remember: neither I nor Italy ever beg.” Representatives from the Prime Minister’s office and the White House have not provided comments on the unfolding situation.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of his planned visit to the U.S., reacting to Trump’s comments. Tajani stated, “The serious and offensive words of President Trump towards Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offend all of Italy. For this reason, I have decided to cancel my visit to the United States scheduled for the next 21 and 22 June.”

Tajani had planned to participate in the Italy–U.S. Business, Investment, Science and Innovation Forum in Miami. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to speak at the event. Rubio’s recent trip to Italy was intended to ease previous tensions with Meloni and Pope Leo XIV.

Trump’s calls for a stronger international stance regarding Iran contrast with Meloni’s discretion over this matter. She had previously opposed reducing the U.S. military’s presence in Italy, which contrasts with Trump’s approach to reposition U.S. forces in Europe.

Italy remains a significant U.S. security partner, with approximately 13,000 American troops based there as of the end of 2025. Secretary Rubio will address the forum, continuing U.S.-Italy discussions on business and innovation.
