The Los Angeles Dodgers’ star player, Shohei Ohtani, was absent from the team on Friday to attend the birth of his second child. Although he missed the series opener against the Orioles, the Dodgers chose not to place him on the paternity list. This decision left the team temporarily short a player. They expect Ohtani to return over the weekend.
Ohtani had pitched on Wednesday, suggesting his return to the team would occur well before his next scheduled pitching appearance. In Ohtani’s absence, rookie Ryan Ward took on the role of designated hitter, batting seventh in the lineup. Right fielder Kyle Tucker filled the leadoff spot, usually held by Ohtani.
Prior to Friday, Ohtani boasted the second-highest OPS (.962) in the National League among qualified hitters. His 1.47 ERA was ranked second among pitchers who had thrown at least 50 innings, despite allowing seven earned runs over his last two starts. Ohtani continued to pitch despite a blister on his middle finger and recently missed a game due to inflammation in his left knee. He attributed this to possible mechanical issues in his pitching.
Will Smith’s Injury Update
Catcher Will Smith is receiving an injection to treat his stiff neck, as confirmed by manager Dave Roberts. Imaging results did not reveal any major concerns, though Smith had previously been diagnosed with an inflamed disk. Despite initial optimism, Smith remains on the injured list beyond the minimum period and is unlikely to travel with the team to Minnesota on Monday.
Edwin Díaz’s Progress
Closer Edwin Díaz is making strides in his recovery from elbow surgery. He has started throwing pitches from the mound, completing a 15-pitch bullpen session on Friday with speeds between 91-93 mph. Roberts described it as a “really positive day” for Díaz. The Dodgers originally anticipated his return after the All-Star break and aim for a cautious build-up to preserve long-term health.
Additional Updates
Left fielder Teoscar Hernández, recovering from a strained left hamstring, seems ready to start a minor-league rehab assignment next week, noted Roberts. Additionally, left-hander Blake Snell, who underwent a NanoNeedle scope procedure for elbow surgery, is advancing in his throwing program. Roberts indicated Snell is nearly ready to begin pitching from a mound.
