The Andrean high school baseball team faced a challenging year. After a tornado on June 11 severely damaged their field, the players found themselves united by a common goal beyond winning. Junior third baseman Chase Nelson expressed the team’s sentiment, stating, “It’s been hard, but we became closer, aiming to succeed for our school and community.” Despite their efforts, the 59ers were unable to secure their 10th state title, losing 9-3 to Guerin in the Class 3A state championship game.
Andrean’s head coach Dave Pishkur praised Guerin’s performance, acknowledging their superiority. “They were better prepared,” Pishkur admitted, highlighting Guerin’s strong pitching and hitting lineup. During the game, Nelson contributed significantly by hitting a run-scoring single and showcasing defensive prowess at third base. Over two innings as a pitcher, he allowed no earned runs.
The game marked Guerin’s first state championship appearance, with starter Tate Troxell, committed to Alabama, delivering an impressive performance. Troxell gave up only one run on four hits, walking three and striking out 12. “He was tough to face due to his velocity and tight slider,” said Pishkur.
Chase Nelson, whose brother Tyler was part of previous championship teams in 2018 and 2019, reflected on the tournament experience. “Playing before a big crowd brings pressure, but everyone should experience it,” he said. Andrean also faced logistical challenges due to field damage but remained focused. “We couldn’t make excuses,” Pishkur stated.
Next season, Andrean will compete in Class 4A. Despite increased competition, Pishkur believes the team will improve. “We have promising sophomores waiting for their chance,” he explained. “Though stepping up to 4A will be tougher, our players are dedicated to enhancing their skills.” He emphasized that efforts such as weight training and pitching programs would prepare the team for the future challenges of 4A baseball.
