Mona Khalil’s Legacy of Conservation Amid Conflict

3 hours ago 0

Mona Khalil dedicated over two decades to safeguarding endangered sea turtles on a beach near her guesthouse in Lebanon. Her actions protected these creatures’ eggs from predators, aiding hatchlings in reaching the Mediterranean Sea. Khalil’s conservation work built bridges between opposing groups, earning her the respect of fellow environmentalists. Her perseverance remained steadfast, even as conflict raged in southern Lebanon.

On June 4, Mona Khalil was caught in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which had claimed many civilian lives. An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon injured her, and she later succumbed to her injuries at American University of Beirut Medical Center, as reported by her close friend, Fadia Jomaa.

Her sister, Amal Khalil, described Mona as a well-rounded individual, both tough and kind. Amal expressed her anger at the loss of her sister.

The ongoing conflict between the Israeli military and Hezbollah, supported by Iran, has resulted in more than 4,000 casualties, threatening an already fragile peace agreement between the United States and Iran.

Mona Khalil, of Lebanese descent, was born in Lagos, Nigeria. She later moved to the Netherlands, where she spent over a decade, including a stint working as a porcelain restorer.
