Pope Leo XIV’s Message on Migration: Honoring St. Cabrini

Pope Leo XIV delivered a significant message during a visit honoring St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, the first American saint and renowned patron of immigrants. He urged Catholics to emulate Cabrini’s example, emphasizing the importance of migration issues in his papacy. Leo has made migration a focal point, resulting in public tensions with President Donald Trump regarding immigration and foreign policy.

During an evening prayer service in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, Cabrini’s birthplace, Pope Leo addressed the relevance of Cabrini’s dedication to serving migrants. He reflected on the importance of learning from Cabrini’s life, highlighting her commitment to assisting those seeking better opportunities away from their homelands.

Pope Leo XIV remarked, “What could be more relevant today than a missionary charism dedicated to serving migrants?”

The pope prayed at Cabrini’s tomb and encouraged young Catholics to follow her commitment to supporting immigrants. He aligned his stance with that of Pope Francis, who also prioritized migrant welfare.

Pope Leo posed questions about what Mother Francesca Cabrini might advise in response to contemporary migration challenges. He further speculated on the potential input from Pope Francis, who emphasized migrants’ importance during his own term.

This event marked another appearance from Leo that has established his first year as pope, with migration-themed events contributing largely to his developing role.

Recently, Leo arranged to appoint a bishop who advocates for pro-immigration policies in the diocese encompassing Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence. Additionally, last week, Leo visited the Canary Islands in Spain, a popular landing point for West African migrants, urging the creation of safe, legal migration routes while rejecting the idea of reducing migrants to mere statistics.

Pope Leo’s statements often clash with Trump’s views, who accuses the pope of dabbling in politics through his speech on immigration. This antagonism is shaping the complex relationship between the Vatican and Washington during Leo’s tenure.

Earlier in the year, reports indicated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would meet with Vatican representatives amid growing tensions with the Trump administration. Leo defends his actions, insisting they are rooted in Catholic values that endorse human dignity, peaceful co-existence, and support for vulnerable people.

Pope Leo’s visit also revolved around St. Cabrini’s legacy, who became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Her lifetime achievements included creating facilities like schools, hospitals, and orphanages for Italian immigrants until her passing in Chicago in 1917.

In upcoming plans, the Vatican announced Pope Leo’s visit to Lampedusa, Italy, on July 4. This island spotlights the intense migration crisis in Europe, with thousands attempting perilous journeys from North Africa annually. Notably, it was Pope Francis’s first destination outside Rome in 2013, offering symbolic significance within the Catholic Church.
