The Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., recently underwent extensive renovations as directed by former President Donald Trump. However, the pool’s current state has raised concerns, with peeled paint and algae blooms making headlines. Trump has alleged intentional damage, claiming vandalism at the site.
On social media, Trump accused vandals of damaging the Reflecting Pool’s new surface and the grass surrounding it. He provided no evidence for these claims. Agencies responsible for the maintenance and security of the National Mall, including the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and Interior Department, have not issued any statements in response.
The renovation of the Reflecting Pool involved painting the bottom blue in preparation for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. Despite efforts to maintain its appearance, algae quickly turned the pool’s water green. Workers applied chemicals to manage the algae, but this resulted in chunks of blue paint peeling off, revealing the rocky surface beneath.
The Washington Post reported an arrest related to the issue. Park Police detained an individual allegedly removing paint from the pool. This act does not account for the widespread paint damage and algae present.
Trump compared the situation to previous incidents on the National Mall, where discolored grass displayed the numbers “86 47.” Authorities suggested these might signify a threat to Trump, the 47th president, as “86” is slang for removal. Investigations continue.
The problems with the Reflecting Pool have attracted negative attention, especially after Trump invested over $14 million in its rehabilitation for upcoming celebrations. Algae regained control soon after completion, impacting the pool’s aesthetic intentions.
