In Tirana, Albania’s capital, protests have erupted against plans for a luxury tourist development. These protests have captured international attention, particularly among those opposing President Trump and his family. However, the primary concern remains local.
For over three weeks, demonstrators have gathered in Tirana, encouraged by some Americans who view them as challengers of Trump-affiliated corruption. The protests began in response to violent actions by security forces at the planned development site, which involves significant investment from Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, and Gulf investors, with an estimated cost of over $4 billion.
While international observers have linked the protests to resistance against Trump family dealings and economic inequality, some conspiracy theorists propose other narratives. They claim these protests are against Israel or accuse the project of being a so-called ‘new Epstein island.’ Yet, these views do not reflect the protesters’ primary motivations.
Many Albanians involved in the protests emphasize that their grievances are not against Trump or Israel. Elis Kodra, a 33-year-old protester, highlighted that their movement targets Albania’s enduring political challenges. He criticized the cycle of politicians who have held power since Communism fell, accusing them of cronyism and ignoring citizens’ economic issues.
Demonstrators, like those carrying flamingo cutouts, a symbol of their movement, stress that their fight is deeply rooted in frustrations with domestic governance and a lack of attention to public needs.
