Sandra Cuevas, the former mayor of Cuauhtémoc, has attracted significant attention during the World Cup. Her celebrations of Mexico’s early success in the tournament have gone viral. Similarities have been drawn between her and Mar Castro, a Mexican pop culture figure from the 1986 World Cup known as ‘La Chiquitibum.’

Cuevas served as mayor from October 2021 to March 2024. She first gained online traction when she shared a video of herself celebrating in a low-cut top. The video captured the imagination of many, garnering hundreds of thousands of views and sparking comparisons in the comments to ‘La Chiquitibum.’ She captioned her video, ‘2026 FIFA World Cup: Long live Mexico, from the Angel of Independence in our Cuauhtémoc borough!’

The comparisons have stirred reactions from fans. Embracing the attention, Cuevas responded in a manner consistent with her playful public persona. She addressed the comparisons in a public statement, demonstrating her good humor despite potential criticisms.

Sandra Cuevas addressed the public during a press conference in Mexico City on September 18, 2025. In her statement, she acknowledged the comparisons without taking offense, commenting on her reaction to being likened to ‘La Chiquitibum’: ‘The Chiquitibum… well, guys, what can I do, I can’t just take them off. They had already nicknamed me that in 1986 and it amuses me, I like it.’

‘I don’t take it as an attack, there will be those who think that way and take it in a derogatory way, but that’s how we Mexicans are,’

Cuevas’s embrace of the spotlight may contribute positively to the perception of Mexico on soccer’s grand stage. With nearly a million views, her viral fame continues to grow, and the effect of such statements might boost morale and support for Mexico’s World Cup journey.
