During a recent graduation ceremony for Bard College’s high schools in New York and New Jersey, outgoing president Leon Botstein faced notable dissent from students. The event unfolded at the United Palace in Upper Manhattan.
Students consistently booed and heckled Mr. Botstein throughout his speech. They were particularly vocal when he advised graduates on handling difficult, dishonest individuals. His suggestion, To get anything done, you’re going to have to dance with the devil,
triggered loud reactions from the audience.
Despite the overwhelming noise, Mr. Botstein continued, remarking, The fifth piece of advice I would give is appropriate to your response: Don’t judge too quickly things in life.
Controversy has surrounded Mr. Botstein following revelations of a close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Although he did not specifically mention Epstein during his speech, many students interpreted his remarks as referring to the disgraced financier. From 2012 to 2017, Mr. Botstein engaged with Epstein despite warnings from senior faculty about Epstein’s past conviction for solicitation of a minor.
Jennifer Strodl, Bard College’s spokeswoman, clarified that Mr. Botstein’s comments were not about Epstein. She stated that the president’s message focused on the importance of dialogue and debate within functional societies.
The college released a statement supporting this view, emphasizing societal benefits from discussions across different perspectives. Nevertheless, several students attributed their response to Mr. Botstein’s Epstein connection.
