The Milwaukee Bucks have reached an agreement to trade Giannis Antetokounmpo, their most decorated player, to the Miami Heat. This decision came just before the self-imposed deadline of the 2026 NBA Draft. Sources confirmed the deal to The Athletic.
Antetokounmpo’s move ends a 13-year tenure with the Bucks, during which he won two NBA MVPs and led the team to its first championship in 50 years. For years, there were questions about whether Antetokounmpo and the Bucks would part ways, and now the decision has been made.
In exchange, Milwaukee will receive Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, and several draft picks: three first-round picks (2026, 2031, 2033), a 2030 first-round pick swap, and a 2033 second-round pick. Bobby Portis will also head to Miami as part of the trade. Though ESPN first reported the deal, it won’t be finalized until July 6 and could evolve.
League sources indicated a strong interest in Herro, and the Bucks are considering keeping or potentially trading him. Herro has one season left on his contract at $33 million.
Antetokounmpo’s Season and Career with the Bucks
Antetokounmpo, aged 31, averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game in just 28.9 minutes this season. However, he played only 36 games due to injuries during the 2025-26 season, breaking his seven-year streak of being named to the All-NBA first team.
Initially an unknown rookie from Greece, Antetokounmpo emerged as a formidable player for the Bucks. By his fourth season, he became an All-Star and further thrived under coach Mike Budenholzer. His Milwaukee tenure surpassed the legends, breaking records in minutes, points, rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals.
One of his career highlights was leading the Bucks to an NBA championship in 2021, overcoming a knee injury and scoring 50 points in the decisive game to secure victory.
Miami Heat’s Pursuit and Motivation
The Boston Celtics had also shown interest in Antetokounmpo, but it was the Heat that pursued him boldly. After failing to reach the playoffs for the first time in seven years, Heat President Pat Riley expressed a strong desire to add another star player.
Riley believed the Heat had been close to acquiring Antetokounmpo at the February trade deadline but negotiations extended into the summer. The Heat’s determination finally paid off.
Giannis’ Struggles and Departure
Despite early success, the Bucks couldn’t replicate their championship victory in subsequent seasons. After a series of early playoff exits and missing the playoffs this year, Antetokounmpo and the Bucks decided to explore parting ways.
Antetokounmpo expressed the personal connection to Milwaukee, citing family ties and memories. However, his competitiveness and the Bucks’ struggle for playoff contention brought the need for change to the forefront.
In past years, Antetokounmpo’s future with Milwaukee had been a topic of speculation. In 2023, he publicly stated his priority was to win championships, signaling his desire for a competitive team.
Impact and Future
The failed partnerships and persistent injuries, including a notable injury to Damian Lillard in the 2025 playoffs, led the Bucks to consider major changes, ultimately trading Antetokounmpo.
Coach Doc Rivers and Antetokounmpo had differences regarding playing style, affecting the Bucks’ performance. Despite wins upon his return from injury, the usage decisions led to dissatisfaction and further tension.
As the Bucks’ season faltered, trade rumors resurfaced, and management considered offers for the first time. Although staying for the season, disagreements about Antetokounmpo’s role and playing time persisted.
Now, the trade to the Miami Heat offers Antetokounmpo a new chance to chase a second championship. With a fresh start, he leaves behind a legacy in Milwaukee, starting anew with Miami.
