Chicago White Sox Secure Comeback Win Against Cleveland Guardians

1 hour ago 0

Chicago White Sox players gathered near their dugout as they awaited the outcome of a video review. Both the Sox and Cleveland Guardians were eager to learn if Tristan Peters had reached home ahead of the tag by catcher Patrick Bailey during a single by Sam Antonacci. ‘I was pretty confident I was in there,’ Peters said. ‘Obviously, it was a close play.’

Would the Sox complete a comeback victory? Or face extra innings? ‘I was just standing there and they were all waiting,’ Antonacci added. The initial call on the field was ‘safe’, and following a lengthy review, that decision was confirmed. Antonacci’s two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning propelled the Sox to a 6-5 win against the Guardians on Monday at Rate Field, with 23,151 fans in attendance.

Chicago White Sox left fielder, Sam Antonacci, hit a decisive two RBI single in the ninth inning, securing the victory over the Cleveland Guardians. This win helped the Sox (40-37) bounce back from what seemed like a potential second-straight late-inning loss, allowing them to tie for first place in the American League Central standings with the Guardians (41-38).

‘It was a crazy one there,’ said manager Will Venable. ‘Really good job of just continuing to battle.’ Antonacci, who enjoyed the intense moments, recorded two hits, three RBIs, one walk, and one run during the first game of the crucial three-game series. ‘He enjoys every moment out there really,’ Venable observed. ‘You see that competitive fight from him, putting together good at-bats.’

The Sox controlled much of the Monday game. Starter Anthony Kay delivered six scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and striking out eight. The Sox established a 3-0 lead with an RBI double from Braden Montgomery in the second inning, an RBI single by Andrew Benintendi in the third, and a home run by Randal Grichuk in the sixth. Reliever Grant Taylor faced challenges when the Guardians tied the score with three runs in the seventh inning.

‘With our bullpen being strong early in the season, you know they won’t be perfect every day,’ Venable commented. ‘You’re counting on those guys to shut the door, and they’ve been doing a good job. They’ll work on things and seize the next opportunity.’

The Sox responded with a two-out, broken-bat RBI single in the seventh from Antonacci, after the ball mysteriously bounced past first baseman Rhys Hoskins. ‘There was a lot of spin on the ball just with the way I hit it,’ Antonacci explained. ‘As a first baseman, the way I swung is kind of a top-spin swing, but I really got it off the end, so it was curling or spinning the other way.’

The Sox entered the ninth inning in the lead, 4-3. Reliever Seranthony Domínguez walked Travis Bazzana, who then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bailey drove him home with a single. ‘You can’t walk the first guy,’ Domínguez admitted. ‘I have to be better than that.’

Bailey then scored on a sacrifice fly to center, just overtaking Peters’ throw to the plate, bringing the score to 5-4 in favor of the Guardians. ‘I think my throw could have been better,’ Peters noted. ‘I tried not to do too much with it, but it hit the mound. Needs to be a better throw.’

Peters had another chance in the bottom of the ninth. Montgomery walked with one out, followed by Peters’ check-swing double to left field. ‘I saw a sweeper from Guardians closer Cade Smith; he doesn’t throw that often,’ Peters said. ‘It kind of threw me off, but my swing was right. I just stopped it and it got right on the line.’

Although Jacob Gonzalez struck out, Antonacci hit the first pitch back up the middle for a single. Montgomery scored effortlessly, and Peters reached home just before center fielder Daniel Schneemann’s throw, sealing the walk-off win. ‘Just trying to scratch one off to tie it, and I was fortunate with Peters’ speed,’ Antonacci said. ‘They played a heck of a game. It was a fun game overall.’ The team acknowledged in the clubhouse the playoff game-like atmosphere, and Antonacci expressed optimism for sustaining their performance.
