Dusty May has taken the helm as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, marking a surprising shift in the NBA offseason. May departs from his role at Michigan Wolverines to fill the vacancy left after Jason Kidd’s firing. His task is to build a team around Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving.
May’s move comes on the heels of his success with Michigan, where he steered the team to a national championship in 2026. With a 64-13 record, he has established himself as a leading figure in basketball coaching.
“The alignment with the front office and ownership group,” May said in an interview with Fox News Digital, expressing his enthusiasm about the position. “Also, having a young talent like Cooper alongside one of basketball’s greatest point guards.”
Dusty May’s coaching journey has been remarkable. He gained attention after taking Florida Atlantic to the Final Four in 2023 and quickly revitalized Michigan into a powerhouse when he joined them in 2024. Over four seasons, he achieved an impressive 124-26 record.
This change leaves Michigan searching for a new coach, a challenge given the season’s timing. The Wolverines have a strong lineup, featuring Final Four standout Elliot Cadeau and promising talent Trey McKenney. NCAA rules allow players to reconsider their options once a new coach is appointed.
The Mavericks, who ended last season with a 26-56 record, have first-round picks in the 2026 NBA Draft numbered 9 and 30.
