President Donald Trump announced that another individual has been arrested related to the alleged vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Sharing on Truth Social, Trump mentioned that six individuals have been detained, and seven have received citations for ‘the damage they did to our Country’s now beautiful Reflecting Pool.’ Despite his claims, evidence supporting these assertions remains absent. Images of the pool reveal peeling blue sealant and algae growth turning the water green.
Allegations of Vandalism
In comments to reporters, Trump asserted that vandals, using sharp tools, created numerous slashes across the pool’s 350-foot stretch. He described the act as ‘purposefully and criminally done,’ performed under the cover of darkness. Additionally, he claimed a small area at the pool’s bottom was cut and lifted, resulting in jagged edges. Trump suggested chemicals were illicitly introduced into the water, promising severe penalties for attempts or actions causing destruction. However, no comments have come from the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, or the Interior Department.
Implications and Reactions
Among the accused is U.S. Olympic canoeist David ‘Davey’ Hearn, who was reportedly detained after interacting with the detached coating at the pool. Hearn, arrested without explanation of the violated federal law, asserted innocence, stating he did not harm the pool’s condition. He remarked on the coating’s texture and denied any destructive action.
Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, suggested that these cases might differ due to the political context. Federal misdemeanors typically result in citations and court appearances, with potential jail time up to a year. Rahmani hinted the president’s 10-year prison threat might aim at those arrested.
Restoration Efforts
The president’s renovation plans for the pool include possibly draining water before or after July 4th, Independence Day celebrations. Trump also announced plans to replace large grass areas around the pool, maintaining that despite needed fixes, the Reflecting Pool remains ‘as beautiful as it can be.’ He characterized it as neglected by predecessors until renovations initiated, which include a $14-million-plus rehabilitation project featuring a new liner and coating, dubbed ‘American flag blue.’
