Approximately fifty thousand people remained evacuated on Monday as emergency crews worked to prevent a volatile chemical tank from exploding at GKN Aerospace’s facility.

Emergency Handling of Methyl Methacrylate

The threat stemmed from a tank containing methyl methacrylate (MMA), a substance that could trigger a dangerous thermal runaway reaction. This reaction could elevate temperatures and pressures inside the tank to disastrous levels.

Residents Cope with Uncertainty

Local inhabitants were forced from their homes over the Memorial Day weekend as authorities feared the worst-case scenario could lead to multiple explosions. Jackie Urquiza, who evacuated with her 7-year-old son, expressed anxiety about the uncertainty they faced. “We absolutely did not know this was near our home,” she stated. Urquiza recounted being woken by sirens and having little time to prepare, leaving with just essential items.

Urquiza faced further challenges as her son’s school shut down and she needed to take leave from work. “I’m trying not to spend right now because I’ve already called off for a whole week until we’ll see what happens,” she remarked.

Similarly, Andrea Luna and her children spent nights in a parking lot, grappling with uncertainty. “Devastating, nerve-racking,” she described it, emphasizing the difficulty of not knowing what to do next.

Hazardous Situation Under Control

Emergency response teams made progress as special hazardous materials units penetrated the restricted zone, finding a crack in the tank that had reduced the internal pressure. The temperature decreased from 100 degrees to 93 degrees. On Monday, interim Chief TJ McGovern of the Orange County Fire Authority announced that a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (BLEVE) was unlikely.

Despite this development, the situation remains perilous due to unexamined elements at the tank’s core. “There could still always be an explosion and that’ll be the next step we’re going,” McGovern noted.

Corporate Response and Legal Implications

GKN Aerospace issued an apology, acknowledging the disruption caused. The company previously settled environmental violations for nearly $1 million in 2021. MMA, although stable and harmless, poses acute toxicity risks when unstable. According to Professor Elias Picazo from the University of Southern California, inhaling MMA can cause dizziness and respiratory irritation.

Fortunately, air monitoring revealed no toxic release into the community, and the Environmental Protection Agency found no evidence of a chemical leak into the environment.

The cause of the tank malfunction is under investigation, with at least two class-action lawsuits related to the event already emerging. The timeline for safe returns remains uncertain. Firefighters and public safety are prioritized, with officials unable to provide an exact date for when evacuees might return.
