A renowned French TV host issued an apology following her critical remarks regarding a soccer star’s choice to leave the World Cup and attend the birth of his first child. The controversy began when Belgium forward Jérémy Doku announced his departure from the tournament to be with his wife in London for the birth of their baby.

Doku’s decision prompted criticism from French commentator France Pierron during an appearance on the show ‘L’Equipe de Choc’. Pierron expressed a negative opinion about childbirth, calling it “a disgusting moment” and suggesting that the father’s presence is “useless”.

The backlash to her comments was swift, resulting in Pierron’s public apology. She clarified on X, “These remarks are solely my own and in no way reflect a collective position. I understand that they may have shocked, offended, or hurt some of you, and I am sorry for that.”

French sports daily L’Equipe, Pierron’s employer, also apologized to Doku, distancing itself from the comments and reaffirming its values.

Doku managed to arrive in London in time for the birth of his son, Praise. He shared his gratitude on social media, expressing thanks for the messages of support received by his family. “Shireen and Praise are doing great, and my heart is full of gratitude,” Doku stated. “Welcoming my son into the world is one of the greatest blessings God has ever given me. Thank you to the team for the support, now it’s time to get back to football and represent my country on the biggest stage.”

Belgium captain Youri Tielemans voiced his support for Doku, commending his decision. “I think having a child is the most beautiful thing in the world…being there as a dad, for myself, I have three and it’s memories you can’t take back. Very happy for him,” Tielemans said.

Doku missed Belgium’s World Cup match against Iran due to a respiratory illness but was cleared to fly to London. Belgium is set to play New Zealand on Friday at BC Place. This match could be crucial for Belgium’s advancement to the knockout stage, following draws in their first two games.
