Qatar’s Assim Madibo faces a five-match suspension following a tackle that left Canada’s Ismaël Koné with a severe leg injury during the World Cup. The tackle resulted in a broken tibia and fibula for Koné, marking a significant moment in Canada’s 6-0 win over Qatar in Vancouver.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee issued the ban, labeling the incident as serious foul play. There is an option for appeal, though the committee’s initial judgment stands firm.
Koné’s injury overshadowed Canada’s victory. The midfielder was removed on a stretcher during the 51st minute after being tackled from behind. His condition was dire enough that teammates and opponents immediately recognized the severity.
Madibo expressed his remorse by apologizing to Koné post-match. Koné later expressed his gratitude for the support he received from friends and fans through social media.
The Qatar national team has not issued a formal response to inquiries by the Associated Press regarding the incident.
While significant, the suspension is not the most severe ever issued by FIFA. Notable past punishments include a nine-match ban for Uruguay’s Luis Suarez for biting an opponent during the 2014 World Cup and an eight-game suspension for Italy’s Mauro Tassotti for an elbow in the 1994 tournament.
