Community Effort to Reduce Violence in Chicago

A dedicated effort to reduce violence and foster community unity occurred on Chicago’s South Side. Pastor Corey B. Brooks, alongside Project H.O.O.D., organized the ‘1000 Men Unity Gathering’ at the almost completed Robert R. McCormick Leadership & Economic Opportunity Center located at 6620 S. King Drive.

Pastor Corey B. Brooks emphasized the broader implications of the initiative. ‘This is bigger than a building,’ he said. ‘It’s about creating a culture where men stand together to protect families, mentor young people, and build something that will outlive us.’

Organizers proclaimed the surrounding area a ‘100% violence-free zone,’ expressing the desire for the community to embrace peace and opportunity.

Unified Community Action

The event gathered various community figures, including pastors, fathers, mentors, activists, business leaders, former gang members, and residents from across Chicago. This collective action aimed to enhance safety, accountability, and opportunity in the neighborhood.

Brooks shared that around 750 men participated, pledging to ensure the area remains safe for families and children. ‘We declared that this is going to be a peace zone, a nonviolent zone, a violence-free zone,’ Brooks stated. This provides young community members a sense of security.

Center’s Role in Community Development

The center is focused on addressing violence and poverty through various programs like workforce development, mentorship, education, entrepreneurship, job training, and community engagement. Attendees received a preliminary introduction to its facilities, looking ahead to its role in serving future generations.

Project H.O.O.D. founder Brooks recounted how the location was once labeled one of Chicago’s most dangerous areas. ‘In 2014, the Chicago Sun-Times wrote that this was the most dangerous neighborhood and it happened to be this block,’ Brooks mentioned. The area no longer ranks among the city’s 35 most threatening locations, which he attributes to sustained community investments.

Vision for National Impact

Brooks created Project H.O.O.D.—Helping Others Obtain Destiny—to alleviate violence and poverty by fostering mentorship, faith, and economic development. He hopes that this initiative serves as a blueprint for cities nationwide aiming for enduring change.

Brooks expressed optimism, saying, ‘I think this center is going to be an example of what we can do across America in urban areas. If we don’t wait on government and take responsibility, we can change the trajectory of neighborhoods.’
