President Donald Trump has commented on the state of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool following recent incidents of vandalism in Washington, D.C. During America’s 250th anniversary kickoff event, Trump spoke about the vandalism, declaring the pool looks ‘perfect’ despite the damage caused.
Trump described the pool as having been ‘gruesomely vandalized by thugs, bad people,’ but reassured attendees that repairs are underway. He noted that he recently viewed the pool, finding it in good condition. ‘It’s been gruesomely vandalized,’ Trump stated, but added, ‘I looked at it just a little while ago. It looks perfect already. But we’re fixing it.’ According to the president, the vandals have largely been captured and are facing prosecution.
Newsweek contacted the White House for further comment on the situation. The president’s statements come amidst concerns regarding algae blooms and additional damage identified at the Reflecting Pool, which officials have attributed to vandalism.
Trump mentioned chemicals and a 350-foot gash allegedly made in the pool’s lining. He shared these claims on Truth Social, noting the destruction of the pool’s ‘hard rubber surface.’ In response to these issues, security has been increased around the Reflecting Pool, including the erection of fencing.
The Interior Department informed Newsweek that the barriers’ installation was pre-planned for Independence Day but was executed sooner due to the vandalism. Nevertheless, the administration has not yet provided evidence to corroborate the vandals’ claims.
These remarks were part of a broader speech by Trump as he inaugurated celebrations for the nation’s 250th birthday. He emphasized his administration’s focus on maintaining and enhancing the nation’s capital.
Senator Richard Blumenthal Questions Reflecting Pool Renovation
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal has expressed concerns about the Reflecting Pool renovation project. He is seeking clarification from the Trump administration and contractors over issues linked to the renovation efforts.
Blumenthal, representing Connecticut, highlighted contracts awarded to entities with alleged connections to Trump and questioned the contractors’ qualifications. He specifically addressed his concerns about Greenwater Services, citing ineffective work that did not prevent the return of algae blooms. In a letter to John J. Cafaro and the company’s CEO Al George, Blumenthal wrote, ‘This sequence of events raises troubling questions about whether taxpayer dollars are being misused for inadequate work on our landmarks.’
This matter is under ongoing scrutiny, and additional information will be provided as the story develops.
