American Achievements Seem Significant

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, a recent NBC News poll sponsored by More Perfect highlights poignant moments considered significant by citizens. These achievements include the abolition of slavery, civil rights expansion, victory in World War II, and the moon landing. This poll, a rarity due to its open-ended nature, reveals three primary categories—rights expansion, military/diplomatic victories, and scientific/economic achievements. Nearly two-thirds of respondents emphasized rights expansion as pivotal.

The Abolition of Slavery and Civil Rights

Key to the nation’s progress, the abolition of slavery post-Civil War and the 1865 ratification of the 13th Amendment were frequently mentioned. This amendment ended slavery, freeing over 4 million individuals. A Texas participant affirmed its significance in shaping laws benefitting the populace. Another respondent highlighted how this set the stage for equal opportunities.

Further rights expansion for Black Americans and women’s suffrage with the 19th Amendment in 1920 gained traction in responses. An older Californian reflected on how women gaining voting rights symbolizes progress, noting increased educational opportunities since the 1970s. Title IX of 1972 also prohibited gender discrimination in federally funded institutions.

Military and Diplomatic Triumphs

Many respondents celebrated American successes in global conflicts, such as World War II victory alongside allies. A Washington resident considered the war as pivotal in preserving Western values and in democracy’s triumph over fascism. For another participant, World War II marked national unity and patriotic spirit, contrasting current perceptions due to political dissatisfaction.

A Tennessee interviewee saw military prowess in winning consecutive world wars, emphasizing America’s dominant global stance, supported by a paraphrased quote from Medal of Honor recipient David Bellavia.

Scientific and Technological Advancements

Technological feats like space exploration also received praise. As NASA progresses with the Artemis program, numerous respondents acknowledged the moon landing’s significance, highlighting its technological marvel with 1960s capabilities.

Some participants viewed the Apollo missions as a testament to American ingenuity, underscoring technological and democratic triumphs. According to a Massachusetts respondent, these achievements underscore America’s status as a stable democracy fostering technological advances.
