4 months ago 0

The NBA has announced that Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George will face a 25-game suspension for breaching the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program. Details of the violation were not disclosed, but George admitted to taking an inappropriate medication while addressing mental health issues.

In a statement to ESPN, George expressed regret over his decision, saying, “Over the past few years, I’ve discussed the importance of mental health, and in the course of recently seeking treatment for an issue of my own, I made the mistake of taking an improper medication. I take full responsibility for my actions and apologize to the Sixers organization, my teammates and the Philly fans for my poor decision-making during this process.”

He further stated his commitment to focusing on improving his mental and physical condition during the suspension period, in preparation for his return to the team. The incident is considered a first violation, as outlined in the agreement between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association.

Impact on George’s Salary

George’s suspension will result in a significant financial setback, costing him approximately $11.7 million of his $51.7 million annual salary. His absence from the team is expected to last until March 25, when the 76ers are scheduled to host the Chicago Bulls, with only 10 games remaining in the regular season at that time.

76ers’ Performance Without George

Before the suspension was announced, George had participated in 27 games, during which he averaged 16 points. The 76ers managed a 16-11 record with George on the court. However, in his absence for 20 games, the team has split their games evenly, standing at 10-10.

As of Saturday, Philadelphia is placed sixth in the Eastern Conference standings. They are set to play against the New Orleans Pelicans later in the day.
