Former UCLA basketball standout Amari Bailey has embarked on a unique path, aiming to become the first athlete to transition from the NBA back to college basketball. At 21, Bailey is determined to regain his NCAA eligibility and join a collegiate team despite previously hiring an agent, which typically affects amateur status.
In a conversation with ESPN, Bailey shared, “Right now I’d be a senior in college… I went to play professionally and learned a lot. So, like, why not me?” This captures his resolve to revisit college basketball before reaching a point where it might be too late in his career.
Amari Bailey in Action
The Charlotte Hornets picked Bailey in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft. During the 2023-24 NBA season, he made brief appearances, playing 10 games and averaging 2.3 points per game. However, after being released, he spent a couple of seasons in the G League, which sparked his interest in returning to the NCAA.
Reflecting on his departure from UCLA, Bailey admitted he had “a lot to prove left on the table” and was driven by the mistakes he made as an 18-year-old athlete.
The Case of Charles Bediako
The case of Charles Bediako offers a parallel narrative. After declaring for the 2023 NBA Draft, Bediako, who played for Alabama, went undrafted but signed a G League contract. He later sought a return to collegiate basketball at Alabama. Despite initially being denied, Bediako secured a temporary restraining order that permitted him to play for Alabama briefly.
These incidences spotlight the ongoing debate around NCAA eligibility rules. Current NCAA President Charlie Baker has stated that players who signed NBA contracts would not regain collegiate eligibility. This stance has prompted discussions about the future of athletes wishing to return to college sports after professional stints.
