Virginia Man Convicted of Double Murder in Elaborate Plot Involving Wife and Stranger

4 months ago 0

A Virginia man, Brendan Banfield, has been convicted of orchestrating a complex scheme involving the murder of his wife and a stranger lured to their Fairfax County home under false pretenses. The motive behind these heinous acts was to eliminate his spouse, allowing Banfield to be with his au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, with whom he was having an affair.

Banfield, 40, was found guilty of fatally stabbing his wife, Christine Banfield, and shooting Joseph Ryan, a man allegedly deceived through a fetish website. Prosecutors indicated Banfield posed as his wife online to lure Ryan, under the guise of participating in a consensual fake rape scenario, intending to frame him for Christine’s murder.

The jury, after nearly nine hours of deliberation over two days, returned their verdict on a Monday afternoon, convicting Banfield of two counts of aggravated murder. Banfield showed little emotion as the verdict was announced. His sentencing is set for May 8, where he faces life imprisonment without parole.

This outcome was the culmination of a prolonged investigation that began in 2024 after the deaths of 37-year-old Christine and 39-year-old Joseph Ryan. Banfield, a former IRS agent, was charged after months of probing led to substantial evidence against him.

Court evidence included this image from Court TV video showing Brendan Banfield in court on February 2, 2026, in Fairfax, Virginia.

Authorities also implicated the au pair, Peres Magalhaes, in the plot, initially charging her with second-degree murder. However, she later pleaded guilty to manslaughter, agreeing to testify against Banfield in exchange for time served.

Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano labeled Banfield’s actions as “monstrous,” emphasizing the gravity of the murders of two innocent individuals from the community.

During Banfield’s trial, prosecutors highlighted the premeditated nature of the crimes, articulated by prosecutor Jenna Sands. Sands revealed that Banfield was deeply in love with Peres Magalhaes and went to great lengths to remove his wife from the equation to pursue a new life with his lover.

Sands pointed out inconsistencies at the crime scene and noted testimonies from Peres Magalhaes that detailed the planning and execution of this insidious plot.

The defense, on the other hand, disputed the catfishing theory and questioned the integrity of the investigation, suggesting that the evidence and conclusions were driven by confirmation bias. Defense attorney John Carroll argued that Peres Magalhaes’ testimony was influenced by prosecutorial pressure, ensuring her a beneficial plea deal.

Carroll presented Banfield as a man unjustly portrayed and accused, emphasizing the improbability of him attempting to dispose of a partner of 19 years over a brief affair.

Banfield, during his testimony, refuted the prosecution’s claims, describing the accusations as “absolutely crazy.” He recounted arriving home on February 24, 2023, alerted by the au pair about a stranger present, and described a scene of terror that led him to use his firearm in self-defense.

Notably, Christine Banfield suffered seven stab wounds to her neck, further corroborating the prosecutorial narrative.

The trial included Peres Magalhaes’ testimony, where she disclosed Banfield’s long-standing desire to “get rid of” his wife and his promise of a future together, including marriage and children, should the grim plan succeed.

Banfield was further charged with other offenses, including using a firearm during the murders and child endangerment, as his 4-year-old daughter was in the house’s basement at the time of the killings.

Prosecutor Sands, during closing arguments, criticized Banfield for subjecting his daughter to such danger, emphasizing the callousness of his actions in orchestrating the murders.
