Karen Read Files Lawsuit Against Massachusetts State Police and Canton

1 day ago 0

Karen Read has initiated legal action against the Massachusetts State Police and the town of Canton. The lawsuit claims misconduct and negligence contributed to her prosecution for the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe.

Filed in Bristol County Superior Court, the suit contends that Read’s acquittal in June last year exposed a culture of bigotry, misogyny, and systemic failures within these organizations. It accuses both the town and police department of negligence in officer hiring, training, and supervision.

The town of Canton and its police department have not responded to requests for comment.

Read was acquitted a year ago, following three years and two trials related to her boyfriend’s death. O’Keefe was discovered outside a fellow officer’s home after a snowstorm and heavy drinking.

Read faced charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, and leaving the scene. The jury found her guilty of drunken driving instead.

According to prosecutors, Read allegedly hit O’Keefe with her SUV in January 2022, leaving him to perish in the blizzard. Read’s attorneys argued that the police mishandled the case, suggesting O’Keefe was killed by colleagues who attempted a cover-up.

The trial spotlighted investigator Michael Proctor, viewed by the defense as biased against Read. The Massachusetts State Police trial board found Proctor guilty of sending defamatory texts about her. His actions led to his dismissal, prompting Read supporters to accuse him of framing her.

The complaint highlights Proctor and former Canton police Sgt. Sean Goode, presenting texts and recordings that reveal derogatory remarks. Read claims these materials prove the men were unfit for the investigation and indicate failings in law enforcement oversight.

Goode faced allegations of misconduct and was placed on leave in November 2025. He resigned this week, as reported by news outlets.
