A suspect identified as a dangerous “monster” has been apprehended following an extensive search for the individual responsible for the brutal murder of an Illinois bar owner. The victim, Courtney M. Drysdale, was tragically killed in an “execution-style” shooting that occurred on a Monday morning.
According to the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect, 47-year-old Julius E. Burkes Jr., was arrested on Tuesday in connection to this heinous crime. Drysdale, aged 30, was shot inside The Line, the bar she owned in rural Momence, near the Illinois-Indiana border, just prior to noon.
Details from authorities indicate that while Drysdale was opening her bar, an armed suspect entered and demanded money. Despite her compliance, the suspect proceeded to shoot her twice, as per reports from WGNTV, which quoted the sheriff’s office.
Surveillance footage gathered by detectives showed a man characterized by a bright yellow jacket, hat, and glasses, departing the crime scene in a white BMW. These surveillance images were publicly released to aid in capturing the suspect.
It appears the suspect attempted to tamper with video evidence before escaping to Indiana, as per authorities’ reports.
Fortunate developments led to Burkes’ arrest as he was departing his residence in Hammond, Indiana, roughly 26 hours following the murder.
In a related statement, Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey expressed gratitude towards community members for contributing numerous leads, and acknowledged the combined efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in capturing the suspect.
“We hope that in some way the apprehension of this monster will bring some sort of peace to Courtney’s family, friends, and community,” conveyed the sheriff’s office via a statement.
Documents from WGNTV reveal Burkes’ criminal background, including a December incident where he allegedly broke into the house of an ex-girlfriend. Burkes was reportedly out on bond for that case at the time of Drysdale’s tragic death.
Further records illustrate his criminal involvement dating back decades, including a 2014 battery incident that concluded with a guilty plea and 12 months of supervised release, which he successfully completed. Notably, in 1995 at age 15, he pleaded guilty to two counts of felony murder, receiving a 37-year sentence, although specifics of his crime involvement remain unclear due to the unavailability of relevant records.
Currently, Burkes is detained in Indiana and is scheduled for an extradition hearing to be returned to Illinois.
