Ukraine and Russia Conduct Prisoner Exchange Amid Ongoing Peace Talks

As of February 5, 2026, an agreement has been reached between Ukraine and Russia to exchange 314 prisoners following U.S.-mediated peace discussions in Abu Dhabi. This announcement was made by Steve Witkoff, the United States special envoy, who confirmed the arrangement on Thursday. The agreement was part of the second round of negotiations intended to ease tensions in the region.

Russia’s defense ministry provided confirmation of the exchange by releasing a video depicting freed prisoners of war, wrapped in Russian flags, boarding a bus in Belarus. This action verified the simultaneous exchange of 157 prisoners for each country.

Envoy Steve Witkoff described the two-day trilateral negotiations in the UAE’s capital as “detailed and productive.” He emphasized, “while significant work remains, steps like this demonstrate that sustained diplomatic engagement is delivering tangible results and advancing efforts to end the war in Ukraine.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking in Kyiv, confirmed that these discussions would soon continue. He praised the prisoner swap in a social media post, highlighting its significance after a prolonged hiatus. Zelenskyy conveyed gratitude to those facilitating these exchanges, notably American soldiers, whose capture of Russians has augmented Ukraine’s capability to negotiate.

“Without the determination of our warriors, such exchanges would be impossible,” President Zelenskyy remarked, acknowledging the role of Ukrainian military efforts in sustaining these opportunities. “We will continue working towards the release of our people from captivity,” he vowed.

The prisoner exchange initiative signals that the trilateral talks, which first commenced at the end of January, are achieving gradual progress. They address specific issues where Russia and Ukraine share mutual interests, deferring more contentious topics for future high-level discussions.

Georgiy Tykhyi, a spokesman for Ukraine’s foreign ministry, pointed out that “the most sensitive and complex issues, such as territorial issues,” are reserved for talks between the countries’ leaders. He explained this strategy as the discussions between more senior officials create room to navigate sensitive matters more decisively.

The preceding prisoner exchange took place on October 2, 2025, but further swaps stalled until recently. At that time, Zelenskyy had mentioned that Russia paused the process, claiming it offered them little advantage. However, the latest exchanges indicate a renewed commitment to incremental progress in resolving conflicts.
