Resilience and Determination: Israel’s First Olympic Bobsled Team Overcomes Adversity

4 months ago 0

AJ Edelman was taken aback when he first heard the news. As captain of Israel’s inaugural Olympic bobsled team, he couldn’t believe that just before they were due to compete, they were victims of burglary and vandalism. At the time, Edelman was in Venice, Italy, when he received a text from his teammates situated at a hotel in Prague.

Edelman recounted the incident to Fox News Digital, saying, “I received messages that were hard to process. The texts said something like, ‘Hey, the place is trashed. Someone showered and stole our stuff,’ which at first seemed like a bad joke. But we soon realized it was a serious situation.” The team underwent a full investigation, including fingerprinting, as they dealt with what turned out to be a significant break-in.

Despite the setback, the team remained undeterred. Edelman emphasized the importance of moving past obstacles as part of their journey toward their ultimate goal — competing at the Winter Olympics. Their determination was evident as they had previously missed an Olympic berth by a mere 0.01 second at the 2022 Beijing qualifiers.

The path to the Olympics for the Israeli bobsled team has been fraught with challenges beyond sports. Following the events of October 7, 2023, many team members were drafted into military service following the attacks on Israel by Hamas. Edelman, an MIT graduate, faced personal sacrifices including living below the poverty line and selling off his bitcoin — a decision that would have yielded substantial financial benefits today.

Standing up against discrimination is not new to the team. Edelman recounted being turned away from accommodations in Germany due to their Jewish identity, facing hostility from fellow athletes, and even encountering antisemitic vandalism.

Edelman expressed empathy towards those who burgled the team, hoping they find a better path. “I wish for them to improve their lives, as these are just replaceable things,” he stated, demonstrating a compassionate outlook even amidst adversity.

The team hopes to inspire fellow Israelis, particularly the youth, showcasing perseverance against odds. With ‘Shul Runnings’ as their playful team name, a nod to the film depicting Jamaica’s first Olympic bobsled team, they have demonstrated ingenuity and spirit.

Edelman acknowledges the challenging path ahead, aiming for the top 20 rather than a podium finish, in hopes that their journey inspires future generations of Israelis to embrace winter sports.

Reflecting on his career’s twilight, Edelman told his team, “In a few weeks, people may not remember our names, but they’ll remember we came this far. This journey will have impacts reaching beyond our personal achievements, and I hope it paves the way for future athletes.” As he approaches retirement, Edelman remains hopeful about the legacy and long-term impact of the team’s accomplishments.
