4 months ago 0

Charlie Puth delivered a memorable performance of the national anthem at the 2026 Super Bowl, showcasing his vocal prowess before the New England Patriots faced off against the Seattle Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Known for his pop hits like “See You Again,” “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” “Attention,” and “Marvin Gaye,” the 34-year-old artist expressed admiration for the anthem, describing it as both beautiful and challenging due to its demanding vocal range.

In a social media video from November, Puth discussed the complexities of singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” noting its expansive range from a low D to a high A, unlike typical songs that span a single octave. Ahead of his Super Bowl performance, he was seen at the keyboard preparing for the event.

Who is Charlie Puth?

Born in Rumson, New Jersey, Charlie Puth’s musical journey began at a young age. His mother, a music teacher, and his father, a builder, supported his natural talents. Puth possesses perfect pitch, an extraordinary ability to identify musical notes by ear, a skill he discovered early on. Reflecting on his childhood, he recalls effortlessly playing back recordings he heard, considering it a normal ability.

The Grammy-nominated artist first gained prominence by posting YouTube videos, captivating audiences with his vocal talent. His cover of Adele’s “Someone Like You” caught Ellen DeGeneres’ attention in 2011. Puth released his debut album, “Nine Track Mind,” in 2016 and has produced successful tracks for other artists, including hits for Justin Bieber, Maroon 5, and Liam Payne. Selection of Super Bowl National Anthem Singer

The process of selecting a national anthem singer for the Super Bowl involves collaboration between the NFL and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. In 2019, the NFL joined forces with Roc Nation for the Super Bowl’s entertainment aspects. Eager to perform, Puth sent a demo to Roc Nation co-founder Jay Brown. According to Puth, the demo reached Jay-Z and received favorable feedback, leading to his selection by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Prior National Anthem Performers

In the past, various artists have had the honor of singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Last year, musician Jon Batiste sang before the Kansas City Chiefs played the Philadelphia Eagles. Country stars Reba McEntire and Chris Stapleton took the stage in 2024 and 2023, respectively. Other renowned performers include Luther Vandross, Cher, Beyoncé, Billy Joel, Christina Aguilera, and Lady Gaga. Puth is the second New Jersey native to perform the anthem at the Super Bowl, preceded by Whitney Houston in 1991.

In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Puth expressed his admiration for Whitney Houston’s iconic rendition, stating, “I’m going to be inspired by what Whitney did, but I can’t ever touch what Whitney did.” He considers Houston’s version, alongside Chris Stapleton’s, as among the best performances.
