The 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games kicked off with excitement as the first gold medal was claimed on a picturesque Saturday during the men’s downhill skiing event. In Bormio, Swiss skier Franjo von Allmen showcased his exceptional skills, finishing the demanding course in 1 minute, 51.61 seconds. His impressive performance earned him the gold medal, resisting a strong challenge from Italy’s Giovanni Franzoni, who finished just 0.2 seconds behind to take silver. Adding to Italy’s success, Dominik Paris clinched the bronze, edging out Marco Odermatt of Switzerland from the podium. Among the American competitors, Kyle Negomir ranked highest, securing 10th place. Reflecting on his race, Negomir shared, “My goal was to put down something where I could stand in the finish and say I didn’t have any regrets.”
In the women’s 10km+10km skiathlon held at the Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium in Val di Fiemme, Italy, Sweden achieved a remarkable feat by claiming both gold and silver medals. Frida Karlsson emerged victorious, crossing the finish line of the 20-kilometer course, equating to just over 12 miles, in 53 minutes, 45.2 seconds. Her teammate, the two-time world champion Ebba Andersson, secured the silver, completing the race 51 seconds later. Heidi Weng from Norway captured the bronze. Notably, Swedish or Norwegian women have claimed the skiathlon gold in the past five Winter Olympics.
Jessie Diggins, representing Team USA, faced a setback due to an early fall, which eventually placed her in eighth position, finishing 2 minutes, 21.1 seconds behind the gold medalist, Karlsson. Although the fall hindered her medal aspirations in this initial Olympic cross-country race, Diggins remained optimistic about her future performances. “I’ve had so much love and so much support from so many amazing people back home,” Diggins expressed. “And I just really wanted to bring them joy and just go out there and race my heart out, and that’s what I did today. I’m really proud of that.” Despite the disappointment, she found encouragement in her effort. “Oh, there’s so many races to go,” she noted. “I was really proud of this skate half. I’m really encouraged by where my body is at. There’s so many variables that need to come together to have a good race.”
