Senate Republicans decided to remove a contentious $1 billion security fund for a White House ballroom project from a key immigration bill. This move came after internal opposition within the party.
Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana noted that the lack of votes prompted the decision to take the security funds out. The bill, set for a Thursday vote, faced revisions and discussions among GOP leaders. They were considering whether general funds for the Secret Service might indirectly support the project without being explicitly linked to the ballroom.
The project was President Trump’s initiative, which Senate Republicans seemed reluctant to support openly. This decision highlights the limits of Trump’s influence on Senate Republicans, despite their usual compliance with his requests during his second term.
The $1 billion security fund was initially part of a broader $72 billion proposal aimed at enhancing Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts. However, complications arose when the Senate’s nonpartisan parliamentarian deemed the provision non-compliant with rules meant to protect the bill from a Democratic filibuster. The GOP faced a choice to either remove it or amend it for inclusion.
