Republicans’ Support for Trump Wanes Amid Economic Concerns

2 weeks ago 0

According to a new AP-NORC poll, Republican satisfaction with President Donald Trump’s economic management has decreased. While around 60% of Republicans approve of his handling of the economy, this is a decline from about 80% earlier in the year, before tensions with Iran escalated. Rising gasoline costs are influencing public opinion as the U.S. and Iran attempt to negotiate a ceasefire.

Despite economic discontent, Trump’s authority within his party remains solid. His influence was evident when his selected candidate ousted Rep. Thomas Massie, a known Trump critic, in a primary challenge. These outcomes underscore Trump’s continued sway over the GOP despite growing economic concerns.

Ariel Gutierrez, a 55-year-old Republican from Wisconsin, noted the impact on his family, saying, “The whole Iran issue has just exacerbated it… it is directly impacting us there now. And yes, that is, I believe from Trump’s policies.”

While Trump’s base shows strong support, he remains unpopular with the broader public, with a 37% overall approval rating. A large portion of the American population disagrees with his strategies concerning Iran and foreign policy.

Economic Struggles

Only about a third of Americans approve of Trump’s economic policies, consistent with sentiments from April but lower than at the start of his second term. Republicans show some disenchantment, although 63% still back his economic management, down from 79% earlier in the year. Some Republicans, like Richard Baumgartner of Las Vegas, accept the economic disruptions as a byproduct of the Iran conflict.

Baumgartner remarked, “Temporary price increases — it’s unfortunate, but it’s something that has to be confronted…”

Immigration: A Potential Asset for Trump

Trump’s focus on immigration has gained mixed reception. Around half of Americans had approved of his immigration policies at the beginning of his second term. Recent approvals stand at 45%, with the administration showing a shift from public enforcement to more subdued measures.

Brenda Theiss from Alabama appreciates Trump’s efforts in comparison to previous administrations, noting his decisive action on border control.

“I liked Obama; I voted for Obama — but Trump was the only one that did something,” said Theiss.

Immigration remains a strong issue among Republicans, with around 80% approval, higher than his overall presidential approval.

Weak Support on Iran and Foreign Affairs

Trump’s approach to Iran and foreign policy is less favored. Only a third of Americans support his handling of the Iran situation. While two-thirds of Republicans approve, younger party members are more critical. Similarly, his broader foreign policy approach sees minimal endorsement.

Amanda Wylie, 22, from Georgia, expressed skepticism about the focus on Iran over domestic concerns, especially amid economic challenges.

“I feel like we’re wasting resources over there… if everyone is worried about gas prices,” said Wylie.

The poll surveyed 1,117 adults from May 14-18 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
