Idaho is renowned for its extensive open lands and sparse population. Despite this, a new legislative measure in the state has introduced the smallest minimum lot size requirements in the nation.
The law mandates city authorities to permit housing developments on lots as small as 1,500 square feet, provided certain conditions are fulfilled. This size is slightly larger than half of a doubles tennis court’s playing field.
The objective is to make homes more affordable and simultaneously conserve farmland. By allowing smaller lot sizes, the state seeks to reduce housing costs and address urban sprawl. This move could lead to more housing options and potentially alleviate the housing shortage.
