Many concertgoers have experienced the struggle of securing tickets due to scalpers and high resale prices. Spotify is launching a program to address this issue for superfans of select artists. The streaming platform introduced ‘Reserved,’ an initiative that identifies an artist’s most engaged listeners and reserves two seats for them at a show.
Spotify already provides presale access to fans of top-streamed artists. However, ‘Reserved’ sets tickets aside for specific users rather than simply offering a spot in the presale queue. In a statement, Spotify explained they will determine real fans based on streams, shares, and other Spotify activities. The platform will monitor Premium users’ activity to confirm they are genuine fans and not bots.
Spotify does not intend to add fees for this feature. Eligible users can purchase their reserved seats within a day. Nevertheless, certain restrictions apply. Fans must be legal adults on Spotify’s Premium service, and offers are limited to local shows. Reservations do not guarantee tickets, as demand might exceed available seats.
Spotify’s fan-engagement strategy echoes Taylor Swift’s method in her 2018 tour. Swift’s ‘Reputation’ tour used Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan system, allowing fans to boost their presale spot by streaming her music, watching videos, and buying merchandise. After overwhelming demand during her 2022 ‘Eras Tour’ presale, many Swift fans hope for a similar system’s return.
The announcement comes amidst scrutiny over rising ticket prices and the dominance of Ticketmaster in the market. Recently, Live Nation, Ticketmaster’s parent company, settled an antitrust case with the U.S. Justice Department. Accused of anti-competitive practices to inflate fees, Ticketmaster will now cap service fees at 15%, divest amphitheaters, and grant more third-party ticketing options.
Despite this, fans still face costly ticket prices. Artists like Harry Styles, Oasis, and Ed Sheeran have canceled scalper-associated tickets, repricing them fairly for fans. Experts believe even face-value prices can be too high, leading to cancellations.
Ticketmaster displays available, unsold tickets as ‘blue dots,’ which experts say cause ‘blue dot fever’ ticket cancellations. The Pussycat Dolls openly acknowledged this issue, recently canceling their U.S. tour due to unsold tickets. Ticketing platforms reimbursed fans who had purchased passes. The group stated, ‘After evaluating the North American run, we made the difficult decision to cancel most dates.’
