60 Minutes Correspondents Decide to Stay Amid Crisis

4 hours ago 0

Lesley Stahl, along with Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim, sent an email to the staff of ’60 Minutes’ confirming their decision to remain with the program. This announcement put an end to the speculation that the CBS News show might lose its key on-air personalities due to ongoing internal turmoil.

In their joint email, the correspondents expressed their commitment to ‘stay and fight’ for the reputation and continuity of the renowned news program. They stated, ‘We don’t want to see 60 Minutes die.’

The email also revealed their disappointment over the departure of Tanya Simon, the show’s executive producer, and several seasoned producers and correspondents. These departures were described as ‘heartbreaking.’ They cautioned that if the show’s editorial independence were compromised, they would choose to leave.

Bari Weiss, CBS News editor in chief, sparked controversy by appointing Nick Bilton, a tech journalist with no broadcast news experience, as the new leader of ’60 Minutes.’ This led to Scott Pelley, a long-time correspondent, openly criticizing Weiss and Bilton during a meeting. Pelley was subsequently dismissed the following day.

In efforts to stabilize the situation, Bilton invited Stahl to dinner to assure her of the show’s continuing journalistic integrity. He later emailed the team, affirming that ’60 Minutes’ would remain editorially independent from its parent company. This company is controlled by David Ellison, a tech industry figure who appointed Weiss.

Stahl, during an interview with The New York Times, explained that their decision was reached after extensive communication, involving calls across continents and even a video conference spanning various time zones, as Wertheim was in Paris covering the French Open.

CBS News has yet to comment on these recent developments.
