On Sunday, China successfully launched the Shenzhou 23 spacecraft, marking another advancement in its space program. The mission aims to transport three astronauts to the Chinese space station, with one astronaut set to remain there for a year. This duration ranks among the longest single stays in space globally.
The spacecraft took off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, located in northwestern China. Li Benqi, an official of the center, declared the launch a success in remarks broadcasted by Chinese state media.
This launch is a significant step as China prepares for its first crewed lunar landing by 2030. The astronauts on the mission include Zhu Yangzhu, the mission commander, Zhang Zhiyuan, and Lai Ka-ying. Lai, also known as Li Jiaying, is the first astronaut from Hong Kong and the country’s fourth female astronaut to go into space.
The crew is scheduled to perform numerous scientific and application experiments. They will also participate in an in-orbit rotation with the current crew of Shenzhou 21, who have been on the Tiangong space station for over 200 days.
In October last year, Shenzhou 21 launched with China’s youngest astronaut and carried four mice, marking the first time live mammals were part of a Chinese space mission. The mission aims to study human adaptability and performance limits in long-term spaceflight, reflecting China’s commitment to advancing its space program.
China’s space station, Tiangong, meaning ‘Heavenly Palace,’ received its first crew in 2021. An emergency mission last year under the Shenzhou program, or ‘Divine Vessel,’ ensured the safe return of astronauts stranded due to a damaged spacecraft. A prior mission faced a nine-day delay in returning to Earth due to damage on the spacecraft’s window. The crew eventually returned on Shenzhou 21 after it arrived at the space station.
As China advances in space technology, the U.S., seen as a leading space competitor, has plans to send astronauts to the moon by 2028.
