Tipping Etiquette at Weddings: What Guests Need to Know

2 weeks ago 0

Wedding receptions often come with different expectations for tipping compared to a typical outing for dinner or drinks. Fox News Digital explored this subject with etiquette expert Diane Gottsman to clarify whether guests should tip bartenders at weddings.

According to WeddingWire, couples should pre-pay a 15% to 20% gratuity to food and beverage vendors unless the venue contract already includes it. This means guests usually aren’t expected to tip bartenders out of pocket.

It’s bad form to expect guests to pull out cash or a credit card at weddings or formal occasions, Gottsman stated.

Open Bar vs. Cash Bar

Wedding hosts typically choose between an open bar, where drinks are covered, and a cash bar, where guests pay for their own drinks. Each setup has different tipping expectations.

With an open bar, the gratuity is often part of the bartending service cost, reducing guest responsibility. Conversely, a cash bar is a budget-friendly option where guests buy their drinks.

Partial open bars might offer free beer and wine but charge guests for liquor. This scenario may require guests to tip for liquor purchases.

Tip Jar Etiquette

Gottsman advises against tip jars in open bar situations as they pressure guests to consider tipping unnecessarily. She emphasized that tip jars are suitable only if it’s a cash bar.

It’s in poor taste to have a tip jar at a wedding unless it’s a cash bar, Gottsman said.

Additional Considerations

While major gratuities might be covered, it’s wise to carry some cash for other services like valet. Even if valet services include gratuities, tipping for extra service, such as front-of-the-line parking, is appropriate.

Clear communication on wedding logistics, especially regarding bar options, helps guests know what to expect. Industry experts recommend updating the wedding website with relevant information.

Inform your guests in advance so they can be prepared, Gottsman advises.

Generally, services like valet, coat checks, and bar setups don’t require tips unless specified.
