President Donald Trump’s efforts to finalize a peace and denuclearization agreement with Iran sparked intense reactions from his inner circle and prominent conservatives. The controversy centers on criticisms of those allegedly undermining the peace efforts or misusing security clearance.
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo faced harsh criticism from Trump’s advisors. White House communications director Steven Cheung, counterterrorism advisor Sebastian Gorka, and political advisor Alex Bruesewitz publicly criticized Pompeo for his comments suggesting the deal might resemble an Obama-era concession to Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
“Mike Pompeo has no idea what he’s talking about,” Cheung wrote in an X post. “He should leave the work to the professionals. He’s not informed on these developments.”
Pompeo expressed concern on X that the potential deal would enable Iran’s nuclear program, resembling past policies he perceived as weak.
Gorka suggested that Pompeo, if informed about negotiations, could be misusing a high-level security clearance.
“You have no knowledge of what is being negotiated,” Gorka stated. “If you did, you might have unauthorized access to classified information.”
Senator Marco Rubio supported Trump’s approach, dismissing claims the administration would strengthen Iran’s nuclear position. He emphasized diplomatic over military solutions.
Senator Ted Cruz also critiqued Trump’s approach, arguing that releasing funds to Iran would be a critical mistake.
Trump’s advisor Bruesewitz downplayed Cruz’s concerns on X, advocating for support of Trump’s strategy.
“Cool, Ted,” Bruesewitz remarked. “Stop undermining the President.”
Senator Rand Paul called for patience, highlighting the importance of negotiations in resolving conflicts.
