Republican officials recently reported having conversations with Tom Kean Jr., who has been absent from Congress for several weeks. His office stated that Kean would eventually address his absence.
Although his voice has been heard by some party members, Kean’s precise location remains undisclosed. The communications were noted by various party leaders in New Jersey, who received calls from Kean expressing his readiness to resume his duties.
Last week, New Jersey Republican officials received unexpected phone calls from a familiar number. Kean, who has been missing for almost 12 weeks due to an undisclosed medical condition, reached out amid a critical re-election campaign.
Carlos Santos, a GOP leader in Union County, received a call at 4:52 p.m. on Thursday. Five minutes later, Joe LaBarbera, the Republican chairman of Sussex County, also received a call from Kean.
“I asked him if he needed anything,” LaBarbera recalled. “Just your prayers,” Kean replied.
Santos described Kean as sounding positive and healthy during their brief interaction. “He sounded excited to get back on the campaign trail,” Santos added. Kean reassured both officials of his expected full recovery, although he did not reveal the specifics of his medical issue that has kept him away from Congress since mid-March.
