Wander Franco Avoids Prison in Abuse Case

2 weeks ago 0

Wander Franco, once a Major League Baseball All-Star, will avoid jail time despite a second conviction for sexual and psychological abuse of a minor. A judge in the Dominican Republic has granted the 25-year-old a judicial pardon. This decision overturns Franco’s original conviction from June 2025, where he received a two-year suspended sentence.

The case against Franco involved a months-long relationship with a 14-year-old girl that began in December 2022, when Franco was 21. The court recognized Franco’s criminal responsibility in the relationship but also considered evidence suggesting a scheme of extortion and blackmail allegedly orchestrated by the minor’s mother.

Despite prosecutors seeking a five-year prison sentence, the harshest penalty was given to the girl’s mother, who received a 10-year sentence for money laundering and commercial sexual exploitation. The prosecution presented evidence of more than $100,000 in cash found during a raid, suggesting significant financial transactions related to the case.

Franco signed an 11-year, $182 million contract with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021. However, his MLB career has stalled since August 2023 due to the allegations. While the team placed him on administrative leave, MLB eventually moved him to its restricted list, halting his salary and service time.

Immigration and Contract Repercussions

Under U.S. immigration law, the case could be classified as one involving “moral turpitude,” potentially hindering Franco’s ability to secure a work visa needed to continue his MLB career. Experts believe the conviction presents significant barriers for his return to baseball in the United States.

Additionally, the Tampa Bay Rays stand to benefit financially with approximately $160 million left on Franco’s contract. The organization can avoid paying him if he cannot secure a visa or report to the team. The Rays may also invoke morality clauses in his contract to void the remaining deal.

MLB Investigation and Conclusion

Major League Baseball’s independent investigation under its Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy is ongoing. MLB had initially waited for the Dominican legal proceedings to conclude before deciding on formal disciplinary actions.

The case highlights the complex interplay between legal rulings, contract law, and immigration policy in professional sports.
