The Chicago Cubs are striving to maintain optimism despite a challenging season. Their situation has deteriorated notably in recent weeks. However, team members continue to hold onto the belief that fortunes will eventually change. Since a successful 10-game winning streak ended on May 9, the Cubs have faced a slump. Yet, they remain focused on their capabilities and the process, hoping their rough patch won’t overshadow their season.
The Cubs are currently experiencing a nine-game losing streak, having lost 13 of their last 15 matches. Their latest defeat came with a 2-1 loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Despite excellent pitching from right-hander Ben Brown, who conceded only one run on four hits in six innings, the Cubs’ offense struggled to deliver.
Manager Craig Counsell has been revising the lineup in an attempt to spark offensive performance. Pete Crow-Armstrong showed potential in the leadoff spot, making solid contact, but with no results on the scoreboard. Ian Happ took a break for mental refreshment, while other players like Nico Hoerner and Seiya Suzuki stepped in as pinch hitters in the ninth inning against Pittsburgh.
Throughout this difficult period, the Cubs have managed a league-low .178 average over 15 games, ranking below even the Houston Astros. Counsell critiqued the team’s performance after the Monday game, urging improvement in both offense and defense. He emphasized the need for more consistent contributions from the players and staff.
The Cubs’ best opportunity in Monday’s game came during the second inning against Pirates’ pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski. With bases loaded, Dansby Swanson was unable to capitalize, ending the inning with a strikeout.
Michael Busch stands out as one of the few Cubs performing well during the slump. He provided the Cubs with their sole run through a game-tying home run in the fifth inning. Busch suggested simplifying approaches and improving at-bat quality as methods to enhance performance.
Ben Brown’s performances are a beacon within this challenging period. Since entering the rotation due to Matthew Boyd’s injury, Brown records a 1.89 ERA with 23 strikeouts over 19 innings. Despite his strong performances, a few clutch mistakes resulted in opponents scoring critical runs.
The Cubs now focus on avoiding their first 10-game losing streak since 2022, turning to left-hander Jordan Wicks for their next game. Ben Brown remains optimistic, highlighting the team’s hard work and camaraderie against the backdrop of such challenges. Brown stresses the importance of playing without excessive pressure and acknowledges the team’s determination to overcome their current challenges.
