Successful Evacuation of Trapped Villagers from Flooded Cave in Laos

6 days ago 0

Rescue teams in Laos have successfully evacuated four villagers who were trapped in a flooded cave for ten days. This achievement follows the extraction of another villager a day prior. Two individuals still remain unaccounted for.

Lao and Thai rescue organizations shared the news of the successful rescue on social media. They also posted photographs showing the rescued men on stretchers, wearing oxygen masks, and wrapped in foil blankets for warmth.

“The water level in the cave dropped sufficiently, allowing the villagers to leave with the help of divers who had provided food and water,” said the Lao organization Rescue Volunteer for People on its Facebook page.

The villagers had entered the cave the previous week to search for valuable minerals. However, they became trapped due to sudden flooding that blocked their exit. Thankfully, one villager managed to escape and notified authorities about the seven left behind.

Thai rescuer Chakkit Taengtang posted a video online showing the rescued men being guided out of the cave’s entrance. The footage depicted them covered in mud and exhausted. Upon exiting, some collapsed and were embraced by emotional rescuers.

The first villager from the trapped group was evacuated on Friday. Rescuers stated that this operation took approximately 30 minutes. A video captured the moment when he emerged from the water with a diver, gasping for air and struggling through a narrow, submerged passage before standing up shakily.

Assistance came from not only Lao and Thai teams, but also from rescue squads from Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, France, and Australia. These teams included specialists who previously participated in the 2018 rescue of 12 schoolboys and their coach from a cave in northern Thailand.

Efforts to locate the two missing villagers continue. Kengkaj Bongkawong, the head of the Thai rescue group Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin, announced plans to explore a deeper cave section. This area, however, remains heavily flooded, presenting additional challenges.
