The New York Knicks decisively beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 130-93 on Monday night in Cleveland, concluding a four-game sweep in the Eastern Conference finals.
Karl Anthony-Towns led the Knicks with 19 points and 14 rebounds. OG Anunoby contributed 17 points to the triumph. The Knicks will advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.
Off the bench, Landry Shamet added 16 points, while Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson both scored 15 points. This victory marked the Knicks as the fourth team in history to achieve an 11-game winning streak during the playoffs. The Golden State Warriors last accomplished this with a 15-game winning streak, securing their second championship in three years back in 2017.
The game took a turn when New York’s fans, including well-known figures like Spike Lee and Tracy Morgan, outnumbered Cleveland’s supporters. The Knicks’ starters were pulled from the game after establishing a commanding 35-point lead. The fans showed their appreciation by enthusiastically chanting “Knicks in four!”
New York has previously reached the Finals three times since their last championship win in 1973. In 1994, they faced Houston, losing in seven games, and in 1999, they fell in five games against San Antonio.
Head Coach Mike Brown has led the Knicks to the finals in his first year after the team parted ways with Tom Thibodeau. This marks the 15th instance since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976 where a coach has reached the finals in his initial year with a team. Brown had previously made a finals appearance in 2007 with the Cavaliers.
Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points for Cleveland, a team experiencing their first postseason sweep since the 2018 Finals against Golden State. Cleveland initially led 8-2, with Mitchell contributing the first eight points, but New York soon took over.
Evan Mobley’s dunk granted Cleveland a momentary lead at 17-14 before New York responded with nine consecutive points. A significant 20-0 run on New York’s part saw them land four successful three-pointers in a five-minute window.
By halftime, the Knicks had already established a 68-49 lead, boasting four players scoring in double digits. Towns had already secured a double-double before the third quarter concluded. New York extended their advantage to 45 points in the fourth quarter.
The Knicks are set to face either the Oklahoma City Thunder or San Antonio Spurs, awaiting the winner of the Western Conference finals currently tied at two games apiece. The Finals will begin on June 3, with either the Thunder or Spurs holding home court advantage due to their superior regular-season record.
